Make Time for What Matters
As an entrepreneur or small business owner, we know you’re busy running your business. Answering phones, taking care of billing, marketing your products and services, and supporting customers, it can be a lot. Nearly all the clients we work with seem to struggle with the same thing: there’s not enough time in the day! We get it. It’s a ton of work. BUT, some of our best advice is to make time for the things that matter, like building a budget or creating a marketing calendar. These strategic documents matter and they help streamline other things, giving you more of the thing you crave most—TIME!
So what are these business things that matter? Let’s get down to it.
Build your budget
If you want to be successful, you’ll need to know how to maintain a budget plan that works for you and your business. It makes everything more efficient, helps you plan for the future, and keeps you in control of finances. For example, if you’ve had a couple of slow months, it might make sense to prepare for another. Knowing what may be coming can help you see where you could minimize expenses or carve out space to serve as a bounce back. On the other end, if you have had some productive and good months, knowing your budget and some areas in which you sometimes are lacking, you’ll know where to send that overflow. That’s why this matters. Being fluent in your budget gives you more time to do other things.
Create a marketing calendar
Marketing can be one of the most time-consuming aspects of a small business. Social media, blogs, emails, and more can leave you stressed and without a lot of extra time. Luckily, we’ve got a way to help mitigate that. Create a marketing calendar. Plan your blog topics out 3 months in advance. Research and keep track of links that help make writing it easier. For social media, we recommend scheduling your posts out a week or two at a time. Take a block of time on a Monday (or whichever day you choose) and take a couple of hours to capture photos and plan posts before scheduling them in Facebook, Hootsuite, or Buffer. Again, by knocking out a week’s worth of work at one time, you’ll give yourself more precious seconds to tackle other things.
Review your business plan
There’s this saying: a business plan is never done. This is true! Business plans assess the future; something none of us can know for certain. Therefore, they need to be updated regularly. As with all things, your business will change and evolve, sometimes even quicker than you expect. Make sure you’re talking with your customers, employees, and others involved in your business regularly to see if they have any ideas or suggestions on how to improve. Update financials, business processes, and strategies once compared to how the business is doing overall. Again, this helps streamline certain aspects of your business and allows you time to focus on other things. Staying on top of aspects of the business and using feedback to update it accordingly is a great way to make time.
