Entrepeneurial Insider Recap: Marketing & Your Business Value Proposition
This month’s segment for Entrepreneurial Insider included a great chat with Julie Lankes, Principal – BoxBoom Creative. Julie is also one of our faciliators who helped update and develop the curriculumn for the Marketing Cluster of our Small Business Growth and Planning Series (GPS). She and GROW Business Development Officer, Mary Hartfield, talked about what a value propisition is and how to create one for your business.
What is a Business Value Proposition?
A business’ value proposition is a clear statement that explains how their products or services solve customers’ problems or improve their situation. In addition, value propositions deliver specific benefits and tell customers why they should buy from you and not from the competition.
How Do You Create Your Businesses Value Proposition?
You know there are competitors. So, it’s important to study them and identify what makes them unique. That way, you can outline and establish how you’ll be different from them.
Most Important Thing to Remember for Small Business Marketing
Know your target audience. Know who you’re talking to, and not just their age, gender, or if they have kids. Clarify more about who they are, where they are, if they drive, what they drive, are they looking at billboards, are they on social media channels, etc., are all questions that will help you identify more about your best prospects. You can always profile your existing customers to find more of this information, too. Successful marketing efforts are created around buyer personas.
How Does GROW Help Businesses with Marketing?
The Marketing GPS cluster includes 3 different sessions that cover all aspects of creating your marketing plan. This includes branding basics, marketing messaging, strategy development, and of course, marketing your business online which covers social media, email, print, and other forms of marketing to reach your target audiences.
Small Business GPS Marketing Strategies includes:
- Part 1: Marketing 101
- Part 2: Branding & Selling Your Value Proposition
- Part 3: Marketing Your Business Online
Cost is $60, which includes all 3 classes, and the next marketing session starts in July – details and registration information available here.

Note: Intro to GROW is a prerequisite for every class or event with GROW
“You’ll come out tired, but with a great plan.” – Julie Lankes, Owner, BoxBoom Creative.
Julie added, “The best part about these classes is that they are more of a workshop. Facilitators aren’t just talking at people, they’rere providing templates, worksheets, and information while you work through things for your business.”
When it comes to marketing, Julie pointed out that it’s important to take a good, hard look at the marketing aspects and take advantage of the time in the classes. In fact, she shared, “As a small business owner, it is hard to take time to do it on your own. It’s important to take time in these classes and invest in your business. You will find information you need to move forward.”
GROW’s goal in offering all of the different workshops and training programs is to give startups, entrepreneurs, and small businesses tools and guidance to work on their businesses and to walk away with tangibles they can use immediately.
