Necessity Is the Mother of Invention

Deb Tacoma’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2006, after she was involved in a serious car accident that left her with numerous injuries, including a broken back. Completing tasks such as bathing and going to the bathroom became a daily struggle for Deb, leaving her feeling helpless.

After this life-altering experience, Deb wanted to create a product that would protect the dignity of limited-mobility individuals for whom personal hygiene was a challenge. And so the idea for the FreedomWand began to take shape.

The FreedomWand is a personal hygiene and toilet aid product designed to help users reduce stress, improve hygiene, and stay confidently independent when full-body movement is difficult.

As she worked on developing and marketing the FreedomWand, Deb utilized a number of GROW programs and services, including classes on QuickBooks and marketing. “Having a program like GROW helps you know that you have a place to go for help,” she said. “It helps you not feel like you’re all alone in this battle of growing a small company.”

The biggest takeaway Deb has experienced during her time with GROW is the companionship and support the organization has given her, especially when the entrepreneurial hardships sank in: “The constant encouragement and emotional support is great, especially when I hear, ‘Job well done.’ Being a single woman and entrepreneur, I don’t hear kind words like that often.”

Deb Tacoma’s story is similar to that of many of our GROW participants, and her success is exactly why we are here: to guide those who are looking to start a business, those who need education or mentoring in a certain area of business, or those who are looking at changes within their business. No matter where you are in your entrepreneurial journey, GROW is here to help, just like we did for Deb and FreedomWand.
