Strategic Planning for the New Year
If you have yet to start thinking BIG for the new year, it’s time! Take a few moments to reflect on the past year and your business journey. Was it everything you hoped for? Were you able to reach your goals? When and where could you have used some extra guidance and resources? At GROW, our entire staff and network of mentors are committed to making sure that you’re able to live out your entrepreneurial dreams. With that said, let’s start planning for 2019!
Set New Goals.
This is the obvious one for the new year. It’s worth it to take some time and genuinely think about this one, writing down what you come up with along the way. And be specific. It doesn’t do you or your business any good to simply say you want to increase sales. By how much? In what aspect? HOW? Sit with this step for as long as you need to.
You’ll hear us use the term SMART goals.
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable (but stretch yourself)
R – Realistic
T – Timely (because nothing happens without a deadline)
Focus and Align.
Good goals are attainable and realistic, but should still push you to take a big step. Make sure that it’s within your means to achieve these goals. Be courageous, but not outlandish. You don’t want to start the new year off on a bad foot by stressing yourself out going for unattainable first-quarter goals. Really concentrate on how your business can be successful in a logical way.
Take a look at your marketing strategy.
- Are there things your business isn’t doing in the digital world that may help you have a more successful year?
- Do you have a website and social media accounts?
- Are there areas in which you could be stronger or dedicate more time to?

Meet with Your Team.
Ask them where they struggled over the past year and where they believe they could use help. Based on those answers, consider bringing on someone to advise, adding someone else or perhaps an intern. For example, if you find you don’t have the time for social media updates, special projects or other repeatable tasks, an intern might be a great idea for you to consider.
This goes for lots of things, but we’ll start with your business’s vision and mission. Hopefully, you’ve had a year of success in 2018, and perhaps your business has evolved along the way. It may be time to update your vision or mission statement based on how the last year has been. Maybe you introduced a new product that has shifted your company’s focus or maybe you’ve simply learned something new about your business. It’s NOT frowned upon to do this little thing called pivoting.
Use Your Resources.
